Variant Options: Tan Welt Versus Dark Brown Welt Playtime
While it is very difficult to photograph, please note that the suede and crepe soles on the Playtime by Hutton Tan Welt and Dark Brown Welt are both identical.
The only difference between these two variants is the welt colour - the welt being the thin leather line between the uppers and the crepe foxing.
In the image below, you'll see the difference in welt colour - with the tan welt pictured on left, and the dark brown welt pictured on right of the image:
Crepe Over Time: Before & After 7 Months Wear
The colour of the blonde crepe on Hutton Playtime becomes a dark brown over time.
The crepe foxing around the soles gets nice and 'fluffy' with wear.
You can see this in many of the pictures we share on social media of worn-in Playtime chukkas, but we thought we'd share a side by side image so you could tell quite easily for yourself.

All Hutton footwear is handmade in Italy, in a hundred year old family-owned factory where they've made crepe-sole boots and shoes since the 1960s.
Can you tell me more about Hutton's signature blonde crepe soles?
Many boots feature crepe soles, but not all crepe is created equal.
In this day and age, most shoe companies will choose the cheapest crepe to use in the production of their shoes and boots.
The option is chosen to check a box, so the consumer sees "crepe" and assumes quality.
But when we choose our materials, we choose to skip past the lower tiers.
At Hutton, we refuse to settle for offering even second best - our blond crepe soles are, quite literally, the best of the best, and the only option we see fit to use.
What about the leathers and other materials used in your footwear?
Each and every Hutton boot and shoe - no matter the colouration - is made of premium quality, locally sourced, Italian leather.
The leather is dyed and tanned by hand - using only natural, vegetable-tanned - a process that happens in Italy as well.
As a result, all of our materials are ethically and responsibly sourced. They are also environmentally friendly, as they are hand-made in Italy using locally sourced materials.
We use expensive, vegetable tanned leather that doesn't require heavy metals, such as chrome, in the process.
All the solvents used to make the boots are water-based, so they do not poison the factory workers.
Even the stitching on every pair is made from cotton sourced from the same region as our factory.

When it comes to the care and maintenance of our footwear, there are no requirements.
Brand new, out-of-box, our boots are ready-to-wear and created to be worn and used for years to come.

Superb. That’s a one word description of these shoes. Hutton produces what I consider a tier one product. One that is both built with care and attention to detail. Blessed enough to have owned shoes from EG, Alden, CJ, AE, etc….The Playtime is absolutely on par - if not exceeding the aforementioned in build quality. The comfort is sublime. I wear a 9D is US and a 8G in UK. I ordered the 43 and it feels custom made. In a world where many seek ways to cut quality in pursuit of profits and tolerate compromise whenever convenient- Hutton takes the high road with these boots. Again - SUPERB.
The shoes are wonderful ! Well made and high quality. They are just like the pictures only better since you have them on your feet ! If you're considering buying them - just buy them since they will sell out quickly and then you'll have to wait for the next batch !
Lots about size on here ! I normally take a UK 7 / 40 and Hutton's 41 are a perfect fit.
Logistics ! I wanted to try on my normal size 40 and size 41 so bought 2 pairs - if you're in the UK Hutton will invoice WITHOUT VAT/import duties - we could talk about Brexit at this point ... but that would exceed the space allowed for this review !! NOTE the VAT you have to pay on import isn't extra , if you lived in the EU Hutton would invoice the item cost plus VAT. What is extra are the duties payable to UK HMRC - how they are worked out is a complete mystery but I think I paid about £50.
Anyway if like me you buy two pairs and one pair is returned for a refund then you will need to go to gov.uk and search for form C285 - this is the form you will need to get a refund from HMRC (for duties and VAT you have already paid on the shoes you're returning). Fill out the form , include proof of return (Huttons will arrange for pick up), you will need a couple of numbers from the courier ( EOIR/MAR ) and that's it.
Nearly forgot to mention that Huttons customer service is excellent I exchanged several emails with Elise and she was very helpful.

Arrived in good time and fit like a fine glove, have to say the quality and detail on these is the best and don’t be hesitant if you’re on the fence…just go for it and they will last you years to come!
I purchased my first pair of Playboys by Hutton of Northampton in 1971, at 14 years old. The were black high cut, and I subsequently purchased various styles and colors, both high and low cut. I am so disappointed in myself for not researching the Hutton brand sooner, however I am now once again totally smitten by the most comfortable and stylish shoe I have ever owned, and I have been wearing some of the top names in dress shoes for decades. Thank you all and congratulations for this opportunity, over 50 years later, to bring this iconic shoe back into my collection!
After watching “The King of Cool” Steve McQueen wearing these in the film Bullitt, I had to find out where I could buy a pair and came across Hutton’s website. I decided to buy the playtime dark brown welt in a size 46. I normally wear a size 11 US and I have narrow feet. The size 46 fit great but a size 45 might fit great as well. Once I finally tried on the shoes they felt extremely comfortable! I absolutely love them! They are the most comfortable boot I’ve ever worn! If you live in the US make sure you check the conversion rate so you know the price and be aware that there may be a an import and handling fee which for me was an additional $120. All in all, these boots fit amazingly and look great! I will definitely buy another pair! Thank you so much Elise for all your help and wonderful customer service.
Amazing comfort right out of the box! The English Tobacco coloring pairs extremely well with almost any outfit. I'm excited to put a lot of mileage on these!
Extremely happy with these boots. I waited a long time before purchasing, and my only regret is not having done so years ago. The quality and fit is excellent (I chose my normal EU sizing). I was also pleasantly surprised at how lightweight the Playtime boots are - which only adds to their comfort. I look forward to seeing how well they look and feel with age. Thank you!
I’m on my third pair of Hutton shoes and aiming for my fourth from Santa. These are among the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. And the team at Hutton couldn’t be nicer ♥️♥️♥️
Since receiving my Hutton Playtime’s i have only been able to wear them a couple times. The fit and feel is outstanding. I have received compliments both times i have worn them. Based on the comfort and exceptional quality i will be adding more Hutton styles to my collection

I’ve had my Hutton Playtime boots for about 10 days now and all I can say is ‘Wow’! They have broken in nicely (I would dare say after a couple of days wear..) and the English Tobacco color is beautiful. The suede is supple but feels quite durable…
In reference to sizing, I have a foot shape that lends itself to requiring a “wide” shoe for most of the types of shoes I have (work, athletic, etc.). The Huttons have worked out well in this respect. My foot feels cradled but not obtrusively so…

It’s been a dream to own a pair of Playtime boots. They are very comfortable and fit straight out of the box. To be able to access the classic Playtime design is a bonus especially as no one sells them in Australia.

I have been following the Hutton Playtime for a while, not knowing which would be the correct size. Finally after a few years I reached out to their amazing customer service and asked. As luck would have it they were only a month out from releasing the size 48 and 49. After trying both the 49 ended up being the one. It fits like a glove, as if it were custom made for me. They are sooo comfy and super stylish. The original boots worn by the king of cool. I highly recommend these fantastic chukkas. For reference I wear a 13E/EE in Crockett and Jones, Alden, Whites, etc and the 49 is perfect.
Best pair of shoes I’ve owned. I love them. Fit perfectly, very comfortable, and look incredible. Wonderful customer service from Elise as well. Yes, they are more expensive than some competitors and shipping outside of Europe can mean extra costs for VAT and duties (Elise made this very transparent from the start). But I have no regrets. Worth every penny.
Absolutely perfect! I wear an 11.5 US in dress shoes and the 46 fit perfectly. They are incredibly comfortable right out of the box. Perfect for long walks or just lounging and listening to West Coast Jazz.

Just received my Hutton’s two days ago and the only shoe I’ve worn since… Went to my daughters in downtown Chicago and spending the weekend with her… Been walking all over and the shoes have been very comfortable…. Let me offer a note on sizing… I normally wear a 10.5 or 11 US in sneakers, mostly 11’s and in boots like Indy boots a 10 as they recommend to size down a half size…. In Euro sizing normally a size 44 but in Hutton’s I ordered a 45 and they’re a great fit with a light wool sock… By all means order a size up… Thanks to Elise at customer service for all her help and her quick response to any questions I had and for sure she’ll do the same for you…! 5 STARS Elise…. Playtime’s are a great looking casual chukka that puts the McQueen in your step…! Love and highly recommend them… Yes, they are one of the most expensive shoes I’ve ever purchased but sometimes you have to pay for quality…! A couple photos included here, the first time I put them on after unboxing and the other in a lobby in Chicago….! Cheers Greg
My Hutton Playtime English Tobacco (EU size 39) arrived this morning a few days after ordering. I am absolutely delighted with them.
They look very good, well made and finished in top notch reverse calf suede.
They fit like a glove and feel so very light. Not surprising since I normally tramp around the place in heavy double soled English country shoes.
They are a delight to wear! I am already thinking of a second pair.
I would also like to mention the first class service of the people behind Hutton
Beautiful shoe, leather, color, workmanship. I wear US 10 but sometimes 10.5 with certain hand crafted shoes. I am still hoping these break-in a bit more as they are snug with a decent walking sock. I do have a slight "hammer toe" condition and these shoes do have a low profile. They are great without socks and I hope the break in with more wearing.
I had to save up quite a bit for these shoes, but it was 100% worth it. These are hands down the highest quality Chukka boots on the market, and without a doubt, the most stylish as well. The craftsmanship is exceptional, and they feel both durable and comfortable. I also want to mention that the customer service, especially from Elise, was amazing. Elise went above and beyond to assist me and made the entire purchasing experience seamless. I really appreciate the dedication and attention to detail from the company. A big thank you to Elise and the team for their excellent service! I highly recommend these boots to anyone who wants something top-tier.
Simply magnificent. If i would compare them to a cream, i would say that it IS very creamy ans light. If you are still hesitating , dont hésitate any longer!
The Playtime is a bit pricey, but it’s totally worth it for the quality. I usually wear a size 10.5 to 11 US, and I ordered a size 45, and it fits me perfectly and is comfortable. Now I’m already eyeing different colors!
The Hutton Playboys are very comfortable, super well constructed, and clearly made with very high quality materials. I love the shade of the suede and am excited to see how they will age over time. Great shoes!
One month in with my Playtimes and they are awesome. Not only have they moulded to my feet making them even more comfortable, they are ageing beautifully with the crepe soles darkening up over time. I was a bit apprehensive about the sizing before I bought these, but with wear they are super comfy. I also surprised by how good the grip is with the soles - I live in Scotland (very wet!) and not only does the leather retain its silky feel after drying, I get so slipping and sliding on wet surfaces. I can’t stress how great these bought are. The biggest dilemma? Which ones to get next.
After great advice about sizing from customer service, I went for the 42. I was a bit apprehensive as I have got my sizing completely wrong in other brands but the size was spot on. These boots are mega comfy and I have found that you will get a little stretch from the suede. Above all, they look great with any leg wear - jeans, chinos or work trousers. For those who are thinking about the price - don’t worry. These boots are worth the money as they are fantastically made and ooze quality. In sum, fantastic customer service, quick delivery but ultimately a boot that meets all the tests. Get a pair!
My first pair of Hutton boots and went for the playtime with tan welt.
I sized up as per the website info and this was correct in my case.
Absolutely beautiful boots and exceptional quality and craftsmanship. They look amazing and smell amazing.
Expensive? Absolutely yes, however I think it is clear these will last and last and get better with age like a great leather jacket.
The customer service has also been truly outstanding from prior to purchase until after sale. I made a simple enquiry about caring for them and rather than a standard few lines on an email or a signpost to a link, I was met with a very extensive email from Elise, with thoughtful advice and guidance. I appreciate the personal touch in a world where most things are generic or robotic.
Top drawer five star all the way from item to service.
A carefully considered purchase alright due to the price, however these are superb and superior to many boots of this type. You won’t regret it.

I like to start this review by saying I've been wearing desert/chukka boots for over 50 years so I know a little bit about how they should be and fit. Years ago there was know way of finding out about different boots, especially ones that were only available in Europe. I live in the US. So when I found out that the Hutton company was the maker of Steve McQueen"s boots they got my attention. I ordered and received my Playtime Boots last week and to say that I'm amazed would be an understatement. The suede leather that they use is unlike any I've ever seen and the color is just beautiful. They did not have my size available so I contacted customer service and Elise helped me be able to order my correct size. These boots are new obviously but right out of the box they feel as if I've owned them for months. Don't let the price scare you away. These boots are by far the best chukka boots I've ever owned and I couldn't be happier. Thank you so much for your family bringing back this boot and making an old guy very happy.
I’ve had to wait a while for these icons to be available but the time waited helped me to save for what is without doubt, the most money I’ve spent on a pair of shoes.

Great quality and style and perfectly represented in the on line photos for colour.
Pleased with my choice of dark brown welt although my normal sizing of 43 might have been fine. I went up to a 44 following other on line guidance and reviews. Whilst these are certainly not ‘baggy’ I could have probably quite happily fitted nicely into a 43.
Maybe I should save for another pair and I’d have a choice and they’d last me a lifetime between two pairs 👍

Well, I just couldn’t help myself: after I recently purchased my first pair of the indeed downright iconic Hutton Playtime’s, a pair with the Dark Brown welt, I after some days simply realized that I also just nèèded a pair with the Tan welt. Why? Now, although the difference between them might look minimal, it de facto is nòt the case. To clarify this I suggest you take a peek at the pictures I attached. I guess then you all will understand what I mean ànd can decide which welt-colour is the right one for you. Have a good one, I say, and… keep looking good, keep feeling good!
Absolutely love my new boots! I was quite unsure which size to get but Elise from Hutton helped me out and I received the perfect size! I’m a very happy customer who will definitely buy again.
I've been walking on my new Hutton Playtime's for some hours now and boy do they fit, feel ànd look good! The walk is as soft as if it were carpet slippers and the build-quality is at the top high-end. Nah, I putted on my ribbed bright-red socks, my toothpaste-white dress shirt, my navy shawl-collar cardigan with brown leather buttons, my off-white Virgil Chino trousers and last but not least my initialised Persol 714SM shades with the correct blue lenses and....I'm gonna enjoy and celebrate my new 'walkies' by having myself some cold brewskies on a sunny terras at the central townsquare. Steve McQueen was right: look good, feel good!
